Lands End: The Best Urban Hike in America
Lands End: The Best Urban Hike in America
Northwest corner of San Francisco. The Coastal Trail from the Lands End Lookout (near Sutro Baths ruins) hugs cliffs above a shore where waves hit granite with a violence that sounds personal. 3.4 miles, mostly flat, shaded by Monterey cypress twisted into shapes that suggest long arguments with wind.
Views arrive in stages: Sutro Baths ruins — Victorian swimming complex foundations filled with seawater and sky. Then the Golden Gate Bridge emerging around a bend, orange towers rising with the drama of a bridge that knows it's being photographed. On foggy mornings it appears and disappears like a rumor being confirmed.
September and October — SF's actual summer, fog retreats, light goes golden. Winter storms bring drama and fewer people. Bring layers always. Fog materializes in minutes and drops the temperature fifteen degrees — San Francisco's way of reminding you it's not LA.
