Lands End: The Best Urban Hike in America

Northwest corner of San Francisco. The Coastal Trail from the Lands End Lookout (near Sutro Baths ruins) hugs cliffs above a shore where waves hit granite with a violence that sounds personal. 3.4 miles, mostly flat, shaded by Monterey cypress twisted into shapes that suggest long arguments with wind.

Views arrive in stages: Sutro Baths ruins — Victorian swimming complex foundations filled with seawater and sky.
